The Attestation of Scripture by John MurrayThe internal testimony of the Spirit is the necessary complement to the witness Scripture inherently bears to its plenary inspiration. The two pillars of true faith in Scripture as God's Word are the objective witness and the internal testimony. The objective witness furnishes us with a conception of Scripture that provides the proper basis for the ever-active sealing operation of the Spirit of truth. The internal testimony insures that this objective witness illicits the proper response in the human consciousness. The sealing function of the Spirit finds its complete explanation and validation in the pervasive witness that Scripture bears to its own divine origin and authority. And the witness to plenary inspiration receives its constant confirmation in the inward work of the Holy Spirit bearing witness by and with the Word in the hearts of believers.

The Holy Spirit's Illumination of Scripture
We know that the Holy Spirit played the key role in the "inspiration" of the Bible (2Pet. 1:21), but we also need to know that He plays the key role in the "illumination" of it (Jn. 16:13; 1Cor. 2:9-16). Without the holy Spirit illuminating what he wrote, the Bible would just be a book of words of ink printed on high quality paper. The Bible, on the other hand is a "living" book (Heb. 4:12, quick = alive), not just because of it's inspiration, but because the Holy Spirit interprets it and applies it to the heart.
